[Published 30th April 2009 10:02 AM GMT]

Whether you're starting a new job or discussing a raise, every negotiation starts with current salary rates -- in other words, what are your colleagues earning? US scientists, help us figure that out by completing our salary survey online today. In September, we'll give you the most current salary data for life scientists.

We'll show you how salaries compare by life science specializations, by geographic location, by degree, job title and more. The more scientists respond, the more robust the data, so send the link to a friend.

Five minutes of your time could translate into a nice bump in your salary down the road. Click the green button for the survey.

Merit Pay System In the Academia Is a Big Joke

Very few research professors in the academia deserve the high cuts and salaries they take. Most just exploit their cheap student and postdoc labors to do most of the real works, while they dish out orders from their desks. They neither contribute much to research or education of their students or postdocs, while they reap disproportinate lion's shares of pays. How to get promoted by exploiting others is just as much the game to play in the supposedly fairer and purer academia as other sectors of a society.

Buddies at the top, tighten your belts to raise emplyment

Salaries should not be allowed to have a free play. Capitalist economies may not like this statement but they must realize what it is doing to the corporate world and the global economy ultimately. laisez faire may be a fashionable economic philosophy but it is a faulty philosophy. Market should not be allowed to rule every aspect of society. The current meltdown had to happen because we allowed financial matters to be controlled by the stock market ad nauseum. Corporate world has so much sway on the nations today. Indian conservatism did not allow this to happen to a certain extent. So India is much better off today than many countries. The middle path is always better. Profit mantra should be regulated by every country. A bit of control, a bit of socialism and laisez faire at certain levels is a much better proposition. Salaries at the top levels should be slashed by 25% or so to raise employment level at the bottom. Tighten your belt buddies who share the booty!
