Sense prevails on MRI rules

Scientists in Europe have been expressing relief this week at the news that the European Union is dropping rules on the levels of radiation medical staff can be exposed to.

The EU physical agents directive had triggered consternation a couple of years ago, with researchersworried it would be impossible to do certain kinds of studies and keep within the prescribed limits.

The rules were due to come into force by next year. But now, after some serious lobbying coordinated by the group Sense about Science, the EU has decided to delay the introduction of the laws for 4 years while they are revised.

MRI limits - too soon to celebrate?

As one of the scientists most closely involved in this campaign over the last few years, I'm glad that The Scientist has picked up this important story. However, there is one crucial point that needs to be clarified. The European Commission has not dropped the proposed new Directive, but has simply agreed to delay implementation by four years. This will allow them time to assess the scientific basis of the limits and of the claims that we in the MRI community are making. There is no guarantee that the same limits will not be presented again in a few years time - our campaign, I am afraid, is far from over!
