Clinton wants TV show about scientists

New York Democratic senator and presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton told a Carnegie Institution audience on Thursday that a fictional TV show like CSI would inspire more students to pursue science, according to the Washington Post. "Make up a character," she said.

The comments were part of a speech in which Clinton promised to end the Bush administration's ''war on science,'' which we covered here. The speech was met with applause, hardly surprising for a prestigious institution (see our profile of one of its departments here) whose researchers are known for their work on stem cells, among other things.

The potential show's producers might start with a trip to the University of California, Davis, Veterinary Genetics Laboratory. A call to Wayne Grody is also probably in order. Calling all scientists in Hollywood!

I agree with Clinton's comment - however shows like CSI do not at all portray the reality of Science. Students pursuing Science under those false pretenses will be in for a rude awakening when they discover that research is not as ?sexy? as portrayed on television. Clinton should encourage more funding for research giving potential students opportunities to try programs such as summer research before they commit themselves to a career that may not live up to the hype.
