When I profiled Millennium Pharmaceuticals' chief scientific officer, Joe Bolen, in last month's issue of The Scientist, he described some amusing airport foibles that had taken place during a recent trip to Japan. Now the whole company is going to Japan - at least on paper. Today, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, one of the first genomics companies in the US, was acquired by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Japan's largest pharma company, for a whopping $8.8 billion dollars. Although Millennium will become a wholly owned subsidiary, the company will continue its operations in Cambridge Massachusetts.
